We are to live a struggle-free life. Discover the differences between the spiritual side and the natural side when it comes to resting in the finished works of Christ. Let’s explore below.
Hebrews 1:3 (NLT) | The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
There is a difference between a promise and a spiritual reality.
Take a look at two examples of promises and their proof texts.
James 4:8 - (a promise) Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Luke 6:3 - (a promise) Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
A spiritual reality is something spoken in the past tense (the action has already taken place). The predominant language of the New Testament is in the past tense. See below for proof texts.
Galatians 3:13 | God has redeemed us…
Colossians 1:13 | God has delivered us…
Romans 6:18 | Being then, free from sin…
Galatians 5:1 | Stand fast, in the liberty, where Christ has made us free
Ephesians 1:6 | Christ has made us accepted in the beloved
Ephesians 1:3 | God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings
Colossians 1:12 | God has made us meat (worthy/qualified) to be partakers of the inheritance…
1 Peter 2:24b | By Jesus Stripes, we were healed…
2 Peter 1:3 | God has given to us, all things that pertain to life and Godliness…
When will rest come to you?
Rest will come when you cease from the work of trying to be worthy. Accept that God has made you worthy.
Rest will come when you cease from trying to merit or earn the blessings of God.
Rest comes as we agree with God that we already have it when God spoke it, not when we receive it.
Isaiah 28:11-12 | So now God will have to speak to his people through foreign oppressors who speak a strange language! God has told his people, “Here is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen.
Examine the Natural Side:
Is it balance or burnout? It’s your choice. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Have I stopped believing that I am invincible because there is a God and I am not Him? Get realistic about your limits. When you do this, it will release you from overcommitment.
When you relax, do you feel guilty? Rest is not a four-letter word. It’s not profanity.
According to Ray Johnston, you should divert daily, withdraw weekly, and abandon annually.
Divert Daily: Divide each day into 3 sections (morning to noon - noon to 5pm - 5pm and beyond). Don’t work all three.
Withdraw Weekly: Call one day a week for rest, recreation, for God.
Abandon Annually: Getting away for an extended period from all demands of work (vacation).
